Swan’s Island Educational Society

The Swan’s Island Educational Society is seeking an Executive Director whose main function is running the Swan’s Island Library. The library serves the community with enthusiasm, thoroughness, hospitality and unsurpassed service. The Executive Director plans, coordinates, administers and directs the operations of the library. This includes, but is not limited to: recruiting, coaching and mentoring volunteers; developing collections; maintaining library technologies; managing the maintenance of the facility and property; and providing fiscal management and oversight. 

Responsibilities:

Library Operations & Staffing

  • Plan, organize and direct the activities of the library and its volunteers.
  • Recruit, train and supervise volunteers.
  • Oversee the development of procedures for daily operations as well as quarterly and annual tasks and reporting.  
  • Set expectations and goals for staff and volunteers and hold individuals accountable for their performance.
  • Oversee acquisition of library materials. 
  • Oversee operation and maintenance of all library technology and equipment. 

Community Outreach

  • With the Board seek opportunities to develop and expand year-round library services and programs.
  • Build positive partnerships with members of the community.
  • Familiarity with Island organizations and social networks highly desirable.

Board

  • Attend monthly SIES Board meetings.
  • Attend committee meetings as needed.

Financial

  • Maintain financial records and files.
  • Prepare the annual budget with the Board Treasurer. 
  • Exercise oversight of day-to-day financial activity, ensuring funds are recorded and deposited appropriately, expenditures are appropriately authorized and financial records are up to date.
  • Maintain records of donors and acknowledge donations.
  • Participate in fundraising activities including appeals, events, donor meetings.
  • Prepare annual tax returns and other required filings.
  • Organize payroll activities.
  • Proficient with QuickBooks.

Miscellaneous

  • Ensure the maintenance of the buildings and grounds and ensure that necessary work is carried out in a timely manner.
  • Mandated reporter.
  • Perform other related tasks as required for the day-to-day operation of the library. 

Hours

  • 20-24 hours per week

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from a 4-year college or university preferred.
  • Full-time year-round resident of Swan’s Island.
  • Knowledge of library principles, methods, materials and practices of library science and library administration is highly desirable.
  • Ability to plan, direct and supervise volunteers and staff.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize workload efficiently and effectively.
  • Knowledge of public relations principles and practices.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work productively with frequent interruptions.
  • Proven commitment to participation in community activities and experience working with volunteers.
  • Proficient with necessary technology, electronic resources and social media resources.

Compensation  

  • $20,000-$21,600 with year-end bonus if finances permit. Paid vacation and sick time.

Physical requirements

  • The individual must possess the physical and sensory abilities to safely perform all essential job functions.

Trial period

  • The employee shall be considered on a trial period for 6 months.
  • Should the Board wish to terminate the employee during the trial period, they may do so with Board approval. 
  • A performance review of the employee’s work will be conducted during or at the end of the trial period.
