SIES Annual Meeting
August 12th, 2019, 7pm
Attendees
Those board members in attendance were: Jessica Harrington, Cathy Harriton, Jeanne Hoyle,Kathleen LeMoine, Julie MacDonald, Nancy Davis, Carol Petraitis, Laurie Farley and Jill Trask
Major Accomplishments-Carol
Carol welcomed the board members and the public attendees to the annual meeting and started things off with a report of our accomplishments over the past year. She also pointed out the stack of printed out financial reports, the minutes from last year’s annual meeting, etc for people to read at their convenience.
Gradual Separation from Historical Society
The process has been a slow but steady withdrawal as they navigate the different avenues to becoming independent. There has been progress with legal matters, various paperwork, filing for their 501c3 status and inventory. The Methodist Church will be the new Historical Society. They hope to have a climate controlled archive room and an exhibit space for permanent collections.
Programming has been growing
More meetings have been held; in person and Zoom conference calls: children’s programming, etc.
Functioning Educational Society committees
The library has been utilizing committees that are getting together on their own to keep up on details of running the library and then meeting as a whole board every other month to make decisions and to check in on each committee’s goals/to do lists. Examples of committees: Programs; Building/Maintenance; Executive. This format is really working well.
Future of SIES
Carol went on to talk about what we as an organization want to see happen in the coming year. 2021 is the 10th! anniversary of being in the building
We need funding for repairs/maintenance as the building and its parts and pieces age.
A capital campaign might be the way to go about raising the money needed.
Children’s programs need more funding as well.
Public Response/Questions/Voting
At this time, members of the public are welcomed to comment and/or ask questions of the board. There was a question asked about the future of funding from the town- A synopsis of what went on at the previous town meeting was discussed and the board went on to say that we are hopeful we will get the correct amount we were promised next year.
Voting on those board members that were up for re-election was done with 11 unanimous ballots.
The public were adjourned from the meeting at 7:50pm.
Notes
We have been wondering about changing the time/date of the annual meeting? Earlier or later in the year.
It has also been discussed that we might want to change from a membership led organization to a board led organization.
Nancy Carter has resigned from her position. We would like to have another year round islander to fill her spot. There is a list of candidates that need to be asked if they would like to join.
We will wait until the next meeting to fill Nancy’s vacant spot.
All new positions are 3 year terms.
The board retreat will be on Tuesday, Oct. 8th. Details will be forthcoming.
